How To Install Jetpack

With a self-hosted blog using WordPress.org, you have the freedom to customize your design and functionality through various plugins. While using plugins and other features may involve installing and maintaining multiple individual plugins, the Jetpack plugin for WordPress aims to simplify this process by combining all necessary features into one easy-to-use plugin.

The Jetpack plugin provides a quick and convenient way to supercharge your self-hosted WordPress blog by adding an extensive range of invaluable features. Some of the most important features of the plug-in include a sidebar image widget, automatic social media posting, email subscriptions, recent Tweets, statistics and analytics, social media commenting and much more.

Installing Jetpack is much like installing any other plugin. You’ll need to have a self-hosted WordPress website running version 3.8 or later, and you will need a free account at WordPress.com (which is different from your blog account), since the plugin uses the resources from the WordPress.com cloud.

To start with, we will look at the process of installing Jetpack, with future installments showing you how to setup the aforementioned features.

How to Install Jetpack

To add Jetpack to your WordPress site, you have two options: installing it from the WordPress plugin directory in your admin dashboard or manually uploading the files to your FTP server. The first option is the easiest:

1. Log in to your WordPress admin dashboard and go to the "Plugins" section.

2. Click on "Add New" and search for "Jetpack." The first result should be "Jetpack by WordPress.com."

3. Click "Install Now" and then "OK" to confirm. Wait for the plugin to download and install.

4. Click on "Activate Plugin" to activate Jetpack on your site. You will then be redirected back to the dashboard.

To use Jetpack's cloud features, you need to link it to a WordPress.com account. Your WordPress.com account is distinct from your blog account. If you don't have one, you can create it here. Once done, follow these steps to connect JetPack:

1. Go to the Plugins page and click on "Connect to WordPress.com" in the green bar at the top.

2. Enter your WordPress.com username and password on the next page, then click "Authorize Jetpack". Jetpack is now ready for use.

Congratulations on successfully setting up Jetpack! It is important to keep Jetpack updated to ensure optimal performance. New versions are released regularly, so it is crucial to stay up to date. You can easily check for updates by visiting the Plugins section in the administrator dashboard. If there are any available updates for Jetpack, you will see a notification next to the "Jetpack by WordPress.com" plugin. Simply click on the "update now" link to automatically download and install the latest version.
